November 13, 2016
ATLANTA – Stanley B. Cohen, MD, was inducted into the Rheumatology Research Foundation’s Honorary Board of Advisors at the Donors of Merit event held at the St. Regis Washington, DC as part of the 2016 ACR/ARHP Annual Meeting. The honor is reserved for individuals who have made a transformative contribution, either through monetary support and/or act of leadership, which made an indelible mark on the Foundation’s future fundraising success.
“Our goal for all of us in rheumatology is to try to find a cure for some of these diseases and clearly raising a significant corpus of money will help that,” says Dr. Cohen.
In 1991, Dr. Cohen inspired the formation of the Rheumatology Research Foundation’s Industry Roundtable. This program, now known as the Corporate Roundtable, has stimulated unprecedented support to fund promising physician-scientists and accelerate the Foundation’s Innovative Research program. A former president of the Foundation, Dr. Cohen was also instrumental in launching the Foundation’s patient giving program.
“I think that everyone wants to be part of something that they feel will lead to something that may improve their quality of life or someone's quality of life with a similar disease,” says Dr. Cohen. “Patients want to get involved and have an active role in improving their outcomes.”
Dr. Cohen is a physician at Rheumatology Associates, a clinical professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, co-director of rheumatology at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and co-medical director of the Metroplex Clinical Research Center. He is past president of the American College of Rheumatology, has served on the Medical Advisory Board of Directors of the Harold C Simmons Arthritis Center at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and previously was a member of the UTSWMC CME Executive Committee.
